Dizziness is a term used to describe the feeling of being woozy, unsteady, or lightheaded. There can be multiple reasons behind this wooziness. Dizziness makes you feel like either you or your surroundings are spinning. Being frequently dizzy can affect the quality of your life. Get the reason behind this dizziness diagnosed for the treatment to begin as soon as possible. Luckily, it is not a symptom of any deadly disease. Below are common causes of dizziness.

Dysregulation of Blood Pressure

Feeling dizzy after you get up from a lying position is due to the sudden drop in blood pressure. When you stand up, your blood gravitates to your lower body, causing the blood pressure to drop in your upper body. Usually, the body responds immediately to adjust the blood pressure. If your responses are slow or absent, your body might not be able to regulate the pressure right away. This action causes the blood pressure in your brain to drop far beyond the normal pressure, causing you to feel dizzy. Postural hypotension is the term used to describe this sudden drop in blood pressure.

Vertigo

The inner ear and some parts of the brain play an essential role in maintaining your body’s balance. If your body’s balance system is disturbed due to any underlying issue, you feel as if you or your surroundings are spinning. This feeling is called vertigo, which is a form of dizziness. Vertigo is associated with many diseases of the brain and inner ear.

Low Blood Pressure

When blood pressure drops below normal levels, the brain does not get enough oxygen and nutrients for working appropriately. The decrease in blood pressure leads to dizziness and light-headedness.

Dehydration

Dehydration results in a decrease in the quantity of body fluid that lead to a subsequent fall in your blood volume, resulting in low blood pressure.

Low Blood Sugar

Glucose provides energy to the body and helps it function properly. When blood glucose levels fall, there is not enough glucose for the brain to work efficiently and effectively. This drop in blood glucose levels results in the malfunctioning of brain cells, ultimately causing dizziness.

Low Iron

As iron helps in transporting the oxygen from the lungs to organs of the body, low iron can cause dizziness because of a lack of oxygen-rich blood to the brain.

How to Handle a Spell of Dizziness?

When you feel dizzy, the safest thing to do is to sit or lie down. Sitting prevents you from falling and getting yourself injured. If your dizziness is caused by dehydration, having a glass of water will help alleviate dizziness. If you have continuous spells of dizziness without any warning, it is advised to visit a doctor to find out the underlying cause. Stop driving and operating on heavy machinery when you are dizzy.

Follow these instructions to prevent dizziness:

  • Get the much-needed rest by sleeping for at least seven hours a day
  • Hydrate your body with at least eight glasses of water daily
  • Have a balanced and healthy diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, pulses, grains, and meat
  • Keep yourself away from caffeinated drinks, alcohol, and tobacco
  • Try to make slow and careful movements
  • Keep yourself stress-free

Talk to your doctor if you cannot function anymore due to continuous spells of dizziness.
