We hope you had a moment to read our blog that refutes the top myths surrounding varicose veins. In this blog, we’re going to take a look at some of the misinformation surrounding spider veins.

Spider veins are typically smaller than varicose veins. They are red, purple, or blue vessels found commonly in the legs, face, or chest. The causes of spider veins include genetics, pregnancy, history of blood clots, age, overweight or obesity, and occupations that involve standing for an extended period of time. Treating spider veins is typically done through sclerotherapy.

Here’s a look at five myths surrounding this condition.

Myth #1: Spider veins are always painful

While varicose veins are often very painful, many people do not even realize they have spider veins. Some patients may experience itching, burning, or stinging of the skin, but it is unlikely for spider veins to cause intense discomfort.

Myth #2: One treatment session will get rid of spider veins

Unfortunately, you can’t get rid of spider veins in just one day. Patients that opt to treat spider veins through sclerotherapy can expect three or four 30 minute sessions spread out over weeks. Treatment length depends on the severity of spider veins and reaction to treatment.

Myth #3: Spider veins only occur in the legs

Spider veins are common in the legs, but they can also appear in other places on the body such as face, chest, and hands. These veins look smaller than varicose veins and branch out like a spider web, hence the name.

Myth #4: Spider veins are uncommon

The risk of developing spider veins increases as you get older, but they are relatively common. Roughly 50-55% of women and 40-45% of men in the United States suffer from some type of vein problem.

Myth #5: You must treat spider veins

Spider veins are usually a cosmetic problem. However, patients that also experience fatigue, swelling, leg heaviness, aches, or bleeding near their spider veins, should speak to a medical professional about treatment options because there could be an underlying venous condition. Spider veins, on the whole, do not cause any health problems; however, many who suffer from this condition do not like how they look.

Talk to your doctor about vein conditions

If you think you may suffer from a vein condition, it’s important to speak with your doctor. Especially if you experience any pain, swelling, discomfort, or heaviness around the affected area, you should make an appointment.

At your appointment, your doctor will examine the spider veins to rule out other venous conditions, specifically varicose veins that require treatment. Be sure to bring all medical history and medications and write down any symptoms you experience. Your doctor may ask you questions related to lifestyle before discussing treatment options.
